Revolution in Music Education in Primary Schools

For the reformation of the music education in grades 1 to 5 of the elementary schools, the elementary school music teachers in 9 pilot cities will be trained in Güher & Süher Pekinel special music instruction system called after the famous German composer „Carl Orff“ that intends the discovery of hidden musical talents and comers.

The Ministry of National Education (MEB) entrusted the redesign of music instruction and music teaching in preschool grades in the preschool-year as well as during the first five years of the elementary schools to Güher & Süher Pekinel.

For the redesign of the musical activities in preschool grades as well as of the music instruction and music teaching in the first five grades of the elementary schools in 9 pilot provinces, the elementary school music teachers in these provinces will be trained in Güher & Süher Pekinel’s special music instruction system called after the famous German composer „Carl Orff“ that intends the discovery of hidden musical talents. Then the trained primary school music teachers will apply this method in all music activities and music lessons.

For this purpose, a protocol is signed between the Ministry of National Education (MEB), General Directorate of Elementary Education, Güher & Süher Pekinel and the Carl Orff Centre for the organization of seminars to train the music teachers in some certain elementary schools.
The protocol seeks to enhance the skills and capabilities of the music teachers in order to ensure all the music-related activities and music instruction in preschool grades as well as in the grades 1 to 5 of the elementary schools to be performed much better.

The implementation of the Protocol starts in the school year 2010-2011 under the name “Project for Improvement of Music Education in Anatolia” in the provinces Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Izmir, Mersin, Bursa, Trabzon, Gaziantep and Mardin that have been chosen as the pilot cities.

Two hours per week

In this context, the music teachers will be trained in “Orff-Approach and Music Instruction”. By the surveys made before, during and after the training on students, teachers and parents, the success of the project will be measured. The aim of the project is to discover talented students.

During the trainings, activity-based programs with interactive applications for teachers will be implemented. The training in music instruction and positive individual development will expand to 2 hours per week.

In all schools where the project will be implemented, information meetings of 1 hour will be organized by participation of the relevant school administration, parent-teacher associations (PTA) and the voluntary teachers.

Music clubs

To deepen much more the skills and knowledge acquired by the training, the school administrations will be encouraged to establish music clubs in schools. Also a website shall be created, where current news about the project as well as already implemented activities to be published.
The target group of the project are especially the 6- year-olds in preschool grades and the elementary school pupils in grades 1 to 5 of the elementary schools.

After completion of the training program at schools in the relevant pilot provinces, the Carl-Orff-Centre will report the outcomes of the training program to the Ministry of National Education (MEB). If some certain success is achieved in the pilot regions, the project will be extended also to other provinces.

Orff-Approach

The Orff-Approach is known as a system based on “creativity”. The system is defined as “a pedagogical concept with rhythm, movement and language in the midpoint.This allows the detection of the creativity that is already existing in human-being, according to which one can make music, dance and make improvisation how he just wants, combined with learning, inventing, trying and creating all types of art is made possible.
